The annual ball is a distinguished academic table party that comes with its own traditional etiquette. Below you can find some tips for formal dressing and manners of the event!

Academia ja IVA tekevät yhteistyötä vuosijuhlilla: juhlavieraat voivat vuokrata laadukkaan frakin 135 euron hintaan (norm. 175 €), sekä lakerikengät hintaan 25-40 € (merkistä riippuen, norm. 45 €). Sovitukset järjestetään hyvissä ajoin ennen ennen vuosijuhlia, tarkemmasta ajankohdasta infotaan lähempänä. Frakin voi tilata myös mittojen mukaan toimitettuna ilman sovitusta. Academia and IVA are cooperating and offer a discount on a high-quality tailcoat rental for 135 euros (norm. €175), as well as a rental of patent leather shoes for 25-40 € (depending on the brand, norm. €45). The fittings will be arranged well in advance of the ball, more information about the exact time will be provided closer. The tailcoat can also be ordered delivered to your measurements without a fitting. You can sign up for the fitting day or reserve your tailcoat according to measurements through the link, and find also information about buying your own tailcoat suit, the form (unfortunately in Finnish) is open until 30.9.
Juhlaetiketti
Pukukoodi vuosijuhlilla on juhlapuku tai tumma puku sekä akateemiset kunniamerkit. Tärkeintä on kuitenkin kunnioittaa juhlan luonnetta eikä noudattaa sääntöjä pilkun tarkasti!
Juhlapuku tarkoittaa frakkia. Frakin kanssa käytetään valkoista liiviä, solmuketta ja taskuliinaa, sekä mustia sukkia ja kenkiä. Rannekelloa ei käytetä frakin kanssa, taskukello voi olla vasemmanpuoleisessa taskussa. Frakin sijaan voi käyttää myös yksiväristä kaksi- tai kolmiosaista tummaa pukua. Tumma puku on juhlavimmillaan valkoisen kauluspaidan ja helmiäisen tai vaalea solmion kanssa.
Täyspitkä juhlapuku tai iltapuku on nilkat peittävä leninki, jonka alta tulisi näkyä vain kengänkärjet. Pääjuhlassa lippujen läsnäollessa hartioiden tulisi olla perinteiden mukaan peitettynä, esimerkiksi hartiahuivilla.
Jos asuun kuuluu hansikkaat, ne riisutaan ruokailun ajaksi. Käsilaukku on juhlaan sopiva, mieluiten siro ja olkaimeton. Pitkät hiukset sidotaan kiinni.
Jatkoilla toimii erittäin hyvin iltajuhlan puku tai sen voi halutessaan vaihtaa cocktail asuun.
Silliaamiaisen pukeutuminen on rento ja esimerkiksi haalarit ovat oikein sopivat! Lisäinfoa silliksestä seuraa myöhemmin.
Akateemiset kunniamerkit ovat erilaiset myönnetyt akateemiset nauhat ja merkit. Kaikki IVAn jäsenet voivat kantaa vuosijuhlissa IVAn yhdistysnauhaa. Nauhoja kannetaan oikealta olkapäältä rinnan yli viistoon vasemmalle. Nauha puetaan liivin alle ja puvun kanssa solmion päälle. Nauhaa voi kantaa myös ruusukkeena vasemmassa rinnuksessa. Nauha ei saa koskettaa paljasta ihoa. Useamman nauhan kanssa suurin tai arvokkain organisaatio on ylimpänä. Kunniamerkkejä kannetaan nauhassa, vasemmassa rintapielessä tai noudattaen merkin myöntäjän ohjeita. Kunniamarkkien kanssa ei pidetä frakin taskuliinaa.
Vuosijuhlilla pääjuhla on illan arvokkain osuus, jossa juhlan tuntua lisäävät vieraiden arvokas käytös. Saavu ajallaan juhlaan ja tauoilta takaisin ja muista hyvät käytöstavat. Saavuthan juhlaan ajoissa ja käyttäydyt arvokkaasti. Oman istumapaikkasi voit tarkistaa plaseerauskartasta juhlasalin ulkopuolelta, tuoleihin istuudutaan vasta lippujen saavuttua.
Puheita ja ohjelmanumeroita kunnioitetaan olemalla hiljaa ja syömättä niiden aikana. Vuosijuhlilla on kaksi taukoa ja muutoin pöydästä poistumista tulee välttää, erityisesti puheiden, esitysten ja laulujen aikana. Tarpeen vaatiessa pöytäseurueelta kysytään lupaa poistumiseen ja tehdään liikkuminen hienovaraisesti. On myös kohteliasta aloittaa syöminen vasta, kun pöytäseurue on saanut ruokansa.
Illan päätteeksi on vapaa sana, johon voi pyytää halutessaan puheenvuoroa. Lauluihin ei ole suotavaa laulaa lauluvihkon ulkopuolisia säkeistöjä. Laulujen jälkeen skoolaus tapahtuu ensin oikealla etuviistossa istuvan kanssa, sitten etuviistosti vasempaan ja lopuksi suoraan edessä istuvan kanssa. Skoolattaessa on suotavaa katsoa silmiin, eikä sitä sovi tehdä tyhjällä lasilla tai laseja kilistäen. Suosionosoitukset annetaan taputtamalla käsiä, ei pöytää.
Annual Ball Etiquette
The dress code to the annual ball is white tie/full-length evening gown and academic honors. However, the most important part is to respect the nature of the celebration and not follow the rules to a t!
White tie means a black tailcoat with white waistcoat, white tie and white pocket handkerchief as well as black shoes. One should not wear a wristwatch with a tailcoat, pocket watch is okay. Tailcoat can also be replaced with a monocolor two or three piece dark suit. Dark suit is the most formal with a white shirt and a pearl or light colored tie.
A full-length evening gown refers to a full-length gown that covers the ankles and only the tips of the shoes are visible. In the main celebration, when the flags are present, bare shoulders should traditionally be covered e.g. with a scarf.
If the outfit includes gloves, they are taken off when dining. Hand bag should preferably be graceful and strapless. Long hair should be tied up.
You can continue to the after party with your formal dress (it is a celebration after all!) or if you want, you can change to a cocktail dress code.
Dress code for the herring breakfast is very casual and overalls are always a good option. More information will be given later!
Academic honors include academic medals and ribbons or sashes. All IVA members are allowed to buy and wear the organization ribbon of IVA. The academic ribbon should be worn over the right shoulder across your chest to the left. With a vest, the ribbon goes under it and with a tie, the ribbon is worn over the tie. The ribbons can also be worn as a rosette on the left side bodice. The ribbons and honors should never touch bare skin! The ribbons from the biggest or most important organization should be placed on top. Badges and other honors can be worn attached to the ribbon, left side bodice or according to specific instructions to the honor. If you are wearing honors, do not use the handkerchief of the white tie.
The main celebration is the most prestigious part of the annual ball. Remember to follow good manners as that is what makes the event festive. Be on time and be considerate toward others. You can find your seat from the seating table outside of the ballroom, only sit down after the flags have arrived and you have been given permission.
Please respect the speeches and other programs by following them silently without dining in the same time. There are two scheduled breaks during which you can leave the table, otherwise unnecessary movement should be avoided, especially during speeches, songs and performances. If you have to leave, do it discreetly and ask your closest fellow guests for permission. It is also polite to wait for your table company to receive their food before starting to eat.
In the end of the night ,there is a specific slot for free speech where guests can request to give out speeches. Songs start from silence and extra verses outside of the handbook should not be sung. Toasts are raised after songs, first diagonally to right, then diagonally to left, followed by toasting with the person in front of you. It is preferred to make eye contact when toasting, but never toast with an empty glass or by clinking the glasses. Remember also that you should applaud by clapping, not by hitting the table.
